March 11, 2010
My colleague, Steve Rhodes, shared the following in the Second Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg’s newsletter:
“One of the great resources in our denomination is Presbyterians Today, our national monthy magazine. Informative, timely and hopeful, it keeps us informed about wonderful mission activities by local congregations, General Assembly news, and other resources for the church.
A feature in each issue is called ‘Spiritual Fitness.’ Several months ago, Kristine Haig wrote an article entitled ‘Measuring Faithfulness.’ It was one of those articles that I tear out of the magazine, sometimes sending copies to the Session.
This particular article shared two guidelines our denomination has adopted in rethinking how we go about our mission:
1. Individual members of congregations are called to share the life of the church in a covenanted discipline of worship, prayer, study, generosity, and service.
2. The church must order its lives in such a way as to demonstrate the value of God’s new reality-values like humility, forgiveness, reconciliation, and trust.
3.
This second guideline was a clear reminder to me that how we live our daily life with one another is our greatest source of evangelism and is the key to unity and growth in the church. And, I will add, it is in direct conflict with our current societal culture of individualization.
Ministers are often overheard saying things like:’We have no option; this is what we are called to do.’ Yet, in truth, we do have an option. We can choose pride over humility, we can choose bitterness over forgiveness, and we can choose separation over reconciliation. It is our choice. Of course the choice makes all the difference in the world, in our individual lives and especially in our life together as a worshiping and serving community of faith.
Well, let me end with some questions that Kristine Haig asked at the end of her column:
Is our worship deepening our experience of God and our relationship with each other and encouraging our discipleship?
Are we learning and growing in our understanding of Scripture and the tradition, and of the context in which we live?
Are we calling forth generosity of time, money, and spirit?
Good questions for us. While we think about them let us keep faith with one another as the best measure of our faithfulness to God.”
Food for Thought!
In Christ,
Jeri

MISSION NEWS
CAMP PEE DEE
On Tuesday, March 2nd, the Mission Commission was able to complete the projects that were started during The Camp Pee Dee Work Week. Eight of our members braved the cold, rain, and possible snow and sleet to have the camp ready for groups, including our youth, to use in the upcoming weeks. Huge thanks to Dick Porter, Howard Moore, Frank Winslow, Jay Davis, Steve Klausmeier, Alan Norwood, and Ed Krajack for their hard work and dedication to helping others.
The Mission Committee is planning a work day on Tuesday, March 16th at Camp Pee Dee to continue preparing the camp for incoming campers. At the end of the day, Jason Steen, facilities director, will be preparing supper for the monthly supper gathering. Please plan to come work and join others from the Presbytery of New Harmony for good food and fellowship. You can also come join us for just the Tuesday evening meal if you wish. Times will be sent at a later date. Contact the church office or Lawrence Hope at landahope@roadrunner.com, 332-6485 or 861-3111 if you are interested. Lawrence Hope, Mission Committee Chair

The food needs will change, as needed, by Robin Young at the Food Bank. Thank you so much for helping with this much needed ministry.

The Stephen Ministers of First Presbyterian Church
We are a community of trained laypersons who have been commissioned to support and minister to those in times of stress and transition. As Stephen Ministers we meet regularly to study together and to support each other for we are all wounded healers. We understand that in challenging times people need an objective, compassionate friend who is willing to walk with them and truly listen and hear them rather than give them advice. Stephen Ministers serve in formal and informal relationships with anyone who needs support, whether for an hour or in an ongoing relationship. These relationships are held in confidence, and can be initiated with a simple “I’d like to talk with you about a concern I am dealing with.” Most importantly, as Stephen Ministers, we are comforted to know that our Lord is the Healer and Minister to us all and we look to God to guide us in all our relationships.
