March 4, 2010

This Sunday, March 7, is Stephen Ministries Sunday. What that means is that the Stephen Ministers of First Presbyterian Church will participate in the 11:00 am service (don't panic--Jeri is still preaching).

After the 8:30 a.m. service, Stephen Ministers will be in the narthex during the refreshments and fellowship time to visit with all of you. After the 11:00 a.m. service, Stephen Ministers are hosting a reception in the narthex.

I would like to tell you a little bit about Stephen Ministry and what it has meant to me. When Jeri answered God's call to be our pastor, she brought the concept of this ministry with her. Shortly after she came, a group of Stephen Ministers from the Aiken Presbyterian Church, where Jeri once served, came to a dinner we hosted and talked to a group of interested people about the ministry.

This immediately caught my interest and would not let me go. I prayed about it, thought about it, questioned my ability to do it, tried to talk myself out of it and so on--you get the picture. I was a member of the first class which consisted of 50 hours of training. I was definitely hooked. I finally felt that I had found what God wanted me to do and after seven years, that feeling has only grown stronger. Since that first class, two more classes of Stephen Ministers have been trained. We meet during the afternoon on every second and fourth Sunday for two hours for training and support. I have gained so much more than I could ever give to anyone else from these sessions and from being a Stephen Minister.

This group of loving, caring, non-judgmental people have become such a big part of my life, both spiritually and as dear friends. I feel as though I have seventeen people who support me, love me and are always there for me, no matter what. This is what we as Stephen Ministers would like to offer you, the entire congregation. We are always here for you and ready at a moment’s notice to be by your side, listen to you, pray with you, love you and walk with you through whatever you are facing in your life.

We are all really excited about this coming Sunday and hope that you will join us in worship and at the reception following the 11:00 a.m. service. See you there.

Joy,

Sidney Horton

STEPHEN MINISTRY SUNDAY
This Sunday we celebrate Stephen Ministry. Stephen Ministers are commissioned lay people who are prepared to offer Christian care to others during times of transition. At First Presbyterian, we are fortunate to have eighteen people who meet regularly to train and support each other so that they may be prepared to offer help to others, both within and outside the church. A Stephen Minister is the person to call when you hurt, are worried, are going through one of life's transitions or just need someone to talk with in a confidential non-judgmental manner. A Stephen Minister is a good listener who will help carry the burden while God works to provide the healing.

PADD OFFERING
Thank you for your continuing financial support of the PADD ministry. PADD opened the Wren Home in Florence almost three years ago. Currently, we have a full house. Six ladies are enjoying life and community in a Christian setting. On March 14, the Presbytery of New Harmony will receive a special offering for PADD. While PADD does receive some state and federal funding, donations are still needed to ensure success of this ministry to the disabled. Thank you for your prayers and financial support. And remember, you are invited to drop in for a visit. The ladies love to have company.

SOUP KITCHEN
A big thank you to all who pitched in on February 25 at the Hartsville Soup Kitchen! We served a total of 68 people. Our menu included lasagna, corn, green beans, dessert and drink. The Soup Kitchen has an account at Bi-Lo to assist with purchasing ingredients. It goes without saying that we can always use an extra set of hands to serve or another warm smile to greet those coming for a hot meal.
Also, we are in need of a co-chair for the Soup Kitchen Subcommittee. If you would like to volunteer or know of someone who might be interested, please let me know.

WOMANLESS BEAUTY PAGEANT AND RELAY FOR LIFE NEWS
OH MY! My cheeks are still stained with tears of laughter! Congrats to all the contestants in the Womanless Beauty Pageant last night at Center Theatre! If you don't already know, Bob Sloan was First Presbyterian's contestant and he did First Pres proud as "Bobby Sue Buttercup"! Tremendous thank you to Bob for having the guts to get out on that stage in front of 300 people and show us his "cute but hip" side! I know Kelly is relieved he did not win!! Special thanks to Brandi Wheeler for her sponsorship and guidance as Bob prepared for his debut! The hilarious evening, of course, was to raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life campaign whose theme is: Celebrate! Remember! Fight Back! Over $3500 was raised to go towards the many support services of the ACS. Darlington County's goal is $185,000. First Presbyterian has a goal of $10,000. We have raised about $200 so far and we have 60 days to go! Here are several ways you can support Relay for Life:

1. Sign up to walk the track on April 23rd and walk for as little or as long as you are comfortable. Honor those who have survived cancer, continue the battle, or who have lost the battle. We will have at least one team member on the track from 7 PM to 7 AM!

2. Buy a luminary for $10 in honor or remembrance of a loved one or a Footprint for $1.

3. Register as a survivor!! It's free, can be done on-line or on paper, and gets you a survivor T-shirt.

4. Register as a team member for $10 pledging to raise $100. You must be registered by March 17th to be guaranteed a T-shirts. Registering online allows you to send out your own web site for on-line donations.

5. Make a donation to ACS through our Relay for Life Team web site, after church at the Relay sign-up, or write a check to ACS. You can send it to my address (1830 West Carolina Ave.) or leave it at the church office.

6. Please pass the web site on to your friends and family. Encourage them to support the American Cancer Society through our page, their local teams or through the ACS web site – www.cancer.org.

7. $100 donation gives your business a prominently displayed sign. If you recruit a business, that counts towards your $100 goal! New business sign orders must be in by April 5th. April 12th is the deadline for signs from past years.

Any questions, please contact Holly Prescott (339-2009 or hlprescott2@aol.com) Thank you!

HABITAT HOUSE NEWS
This summer, during the week of June 14-19, FPC is going to build a Habitat for Humanity house here in Hartsville. Anyone who is interested in participating in this project is invited to meet Wednesday, March 10, at 6:00 p.m., and discuss the plans. We can eat together at the Wednesday night supper and be done by 7:00 p.m. so that some of you can go to choir practice. Please let the church office or me know whether you can attend so that enough tables can be arranged. The plan is for us to install the interior and exterior walls on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday morning, a contractor will install the rafters and sheathing on the roof. Then on Friday afternoon we will install the drip edge and felt paper. On Saturday, we will shingle the roof. BUT, the purpose of the meeting on the 10th of March is to not just fill in details, but to improve this plan and change it if needed. So bring your thinking caps. One question, what to do on Thursday and Friday morning? Note that we will need lunch provided on the days we work, so if you can help with that, please let me know. Thanks, Jay Davis
